It is a world that is as old as the cave man and as young as tomorrow. You will not find this world on any map. It has no boundaries, north or south, east or west. Yet people of all countries have journeyed there.
In this world there are wonderful things to see-- paintings that glow with color, strange masks from far-off lands, buildings of ageless splendor, and many shapes and forms.
There are wonderful things to hear-songs to sing and music to play.
Minstrel songs and symphonies fill the air with sounds of music.
There are plays and actors many kinds. Clowns strut upon stage to make us laugh. A ship sails away to hunt for pirate treasure. Shadows talk and puppets dance for our pleasure.
Rembrandt and Michelangelo belong to this world. Beethoven and Shakespeare are part of it. An unknown potter in ancient Greece, an Indian who carved a war club long ago. and perhaps you, yourself, belong to it, too.
For the world we will explore is the world of the arts, and there are many kinds of arts and artists. Each Artist works in different way to tell the story of the world he knows or imagines.
Some artists use words to tell a story. Other artists use picture or a carving or the sounds of music. All artists use the language of the arts a language that people of every time and in every country have understood and loved.
As you adventure with us through the wonderful world of the arts, we hope that you will learn to love and understand and use that language, too.
